Title: | Ultrasonic Spray Coating: Optimized layer formation for thin-film applications | Authors: | STRYCKERS, Jeroen | Advisors: | DEFERME, Wim MANCA, Jean |
Issue Date: | 2019 | Abstract: | This thesis aims to understand how deposition of thin electro-optical organic
functional layers can be achieved by ultrasonic spray coating (USSC). It shows
how the broad range of parameters of the ultrasonic spray coating system
influence the layer formation of very thin films (30 nm to 1 µm). Further also the
influence of ink formulation and substrate functionalization are researched in such
a way that it can be understood how substrate pre-treatment, ink formulation and
ultrasonic spray coating parameters influence the final thin film properties. Within
this thesis, (organic-) electronic applications for health (sensors) and energy
(OPV/OLED) are focused on as applications for which layer deposition is optimized.
First the general concept of ultrasonic spray coating is introduced, together with
the setup and nozzles used throughout the experiments. The process is studied,
from the formation of the droplets, the interaction with the substrate after impact,
till the resulting layer is formed. The importance of substrate cleaning and pretreatment is stressed while the concepts of surface tension and surface free
energy are presented. Complex evaporation and Marangoni flows are discussed
before introducing the coffee stain effect for nano-dispersions. The most important
parameters involved in this phenomenon are discussed together with how they
can help to alleviate the effect. Subsequently, the various approaches to the actual
optimization of ultrasonic spray coated layers are described in more detail. More
specific, optimisation through altering the USSC parameters itself, ink
formulation, multilayer approach and functionalisation. Finally, the most common
failure mechanisms in coatings are described as they can aid to determine the
cause and mechanisms leading up to the degradation of the layer.
In Chapter, 3 the ultrasonic spray coating of functional materials from solution is
covered by two application cases in relation to other solution deposition
techniques. The first is the deposition of PEDOT:PSS as conducting layer on lenses.
A combination of ink optimisation and the optimization of the USSC parameters
lead to the desired resulting layer with a sheet resistance in the order of
100 Ohm/sq and a thickness in the order of 100 nm thick on a 3D object. The
second application focuses on the deposition of the emissive layer in an OLED. Ink
optimization through varying the polymer-solvent mixture and ultrasonic spray
coating variables achieve low roughness uniform films with a typical thickness of
80 nm. It is shown that the final layer thickness can be tuned easily by varying
the flow rate and nozzle speed. The produced OLEDs produce a luminous power
efficiency in the order of 10 lm/W. USSC therefore, is proven to be a viable
deposition technique for the production of OLEDs as optical and analytical
techniques determine there was no noteworthy negative influence of the
ultrasonic atomization on the original properties of the polymer or the resulting
OLEDs efficacy.
In Chapter 4 the ultrasonic spray coating of micro- and nanoparticles from
suspension is discussed together with three different optimization strategies. A
first strategy focuses on the alteration of the ink formulation to optimize the polystyrene model system and the sensors based on Molecular Imprinted
Polymers (MIPs). The stacking strategy, as second strategy, leads to a promising
proof of concept of a USSC polymer (blend)nanoparticle solar cell with a power
conversion efficiency (PCE) of 0.4%. Finally, functionalization enables the
successful deposition of gold and magnetite nanoparticles and allowed for the
fabrication of hybrid magnetic-plasmonic nanostructures that exhibit a large
Faraday rotation. In comparison to the layer-by-layer (LbL)deposition technology
used in state-of-the-art literature, ultrasonic spray coating can achieve similar
results but with much more flexibility in final layer properties as compared to LbL
deposition which opens the road for a broad range of applications for nanoparticle
based applications.
In the concluding final chapter, the pioneering role of this work is highlighted as
ultrasonic spray coating is still in its infancy compared to conventional spray
coating. Spray coating might still be considered an art, this work demonstrates
that USSC allows to successfully influence the outcome of the resulting thin layer
through the precise control of the individual process parameters, the ink
formulation and the substrate pre-treatment. This thesis serves as a first step
towards a full understanding of thin layer deposition for a broad range of functional
materials. Further research and development will allow the USSC technology to
mature into a viable scientific production process for the new generation of
technically demanding functional thin film applications. |
