Title: | Valorization of phosphogypsum in cementitious materials | Authors: | GIJBELS, Katrijn | Advisors: | Schroeyers, Wouter Pontikes, Yiannis Schreurs, Sonja |
Issue Date: | 2020 | Abstract: | Ensuring the sustainability of the biosphere by efficient use of planetary
resources has become a key principal for a number of national and international
policies. Sustainable development will depend not only on a more
environmentally robust industrial ecology, but also the ecological restructuring of
industry will depend on a sustainable infrastructure for energy, primary and
secondary resources at multiple levels. The contemporary production and
discharge of industrial by-products offers new opportunities to improve existing
practices or to develop breakthrough recycling alternatives. Phosphogypsum
(PG) is one such by-product with an overall worldwide recycling rate of less than
5%, while the total amount of PG landfilled by 2040 is estimated to amount 7 to
8 billion tonnes [1]. The aim of this thesis is to increase the valorization of PG in
Flanders and beyond, particularly by the development of cementitious materials
from the combination of PG with other locally available industrial by-products,
such as slags from the iron and steel industry. These by-product based
alternatives could significantly lower the carbon footprint imposed by the
production of conventional cementitious binders, and ultimately contribute to the
development of a more circular economy. A significant obstacle, however, is the
heterogeneous impurity composition of PG, which is typically a variable mixture
of remnants of phosphoric acid, fluorides, heavy metals, rare earth elements,
organic substances and appreciable amounts of naturally occurring radionuclides
(NOR). Therefore, innovative environmentally-safe materials should be
engineered, which integrate industrial by-products yet comply with existing
material and safety standards. Alkali-activated and ettringite-based binders were
selected as potential incorporation matrices for PG, in combination with blast
furnace slag (BFS) and ladle slag (LS), respectively. Alkali-activated binders
were selected because they are internationally recognized as promising binders
with high potential in niche applications [2], for which BFS was selected because
its alkali activation renders a compact microstructure with low porosity.
Ettringite-based binders were developed as part of an exchange project to
Finland, as a continuation of the excellent, pioneering work of Nguyen et al. [3]
who developed ettringite-based binders from the combination of LS and
synthetic gypsum. The amount of PG that was incorporated was defined by the limits imposed by the European Union Basic Safety Standards (EU-BSS) [4] for
building materials. The research was approached from both a material and
radiological characterization point of view, and the leaching behavior was also
investigated. The experimental results were assessed on the basis of current
relevant European standardization and legislation applicable to construction and
building products, aiming to promote their market uptake in future. The number
of samples was, however, limited due to cost and time considerations.
Therefore, much more research is needed to ultimately evaluate the
reasonability and feasibility of this practice. The latter includes a combination of
advanced materials science, techno-economic and environmental assessment in
order to specifically define proper (niche) applications. In each binder, PG acted
as an active component, as it completely dissolved and took part in hydration
product formation. Alkali-activated binders were characterized by low radon
release and appropriate physico-chemical properties, although the alkali content
should be lowered in view of lower leaching rates, increased production safety,
and lower production costs and environmental footprint imposed by the
production of alkalis (while simultaneously obtaining adequate properties in all
its relevant aspects/domains). Ettringite-based binders were promising because
they completely exclude the need for alkaline solutions, with obvious economic
and environmental benefits. In addition, they incorporated the highest amount
of PG and showed low leaching rates; although the radon emanation should be
optimized (i.e., lowered) and the setting time needs to decrease. For ettringitebased binders, applications should also be carefully sought due to the pH- and
temperature-dependent stability of ettringite. Finally, the valorization of PG in
alkali-activated and ettringite-based binders should be benchmarked against the
best available techniques (BAT) that exist today within the relevant industrial
stakeholders.
