Abstract: Agingisassociatedwithchangesinthecentralnervoussystemandleadsto reducedlifequality.Here,weinvestigatedtheage-relateddifferencesinthe CNSunderlyingmotorperformancedeficitsusingmagneticresonancespectroscopyanddiffusionMRI.MRSmeasuredN-acetylaspartate(NAA),choline(Cho), andcreatine(Cr)concentrationsinthesensorimotorandoccipitalcortex, whereasdMRIquantifiedapparentfiberdensity(FD)inthesamevoxelstoevaluatewhitemattermicrostructuralorganization.WefoundthatagingwasassociatedwithincreasedreactiontimeandreducedFDandNAAconcentrationinthe sensorimotorvoxel.BothFDandNAAmediatedtheassociationbetweenage andreactiontime.TheNAAconcentrationwasfoundtomediatetheassociation betweenageandFDinthesensorimotorvoxel.Weproposethattheage-related decreaseinNAAconcentrationmayresultinreducedaxonalfiberdensityinthe sensorimotorcortexwhichmayultimatelyaccountfortheresponseslownessof olderparticipants.
