Abstract: If we have a look at the demographic evolution, not only in Belgium, but also in all European countries, we witness a broadening at the top of the population pyramid while the basis is narrowing. The challenge becomes very clear: eminent worker shortage and tremendous loss of know-how and know-why as older employees leave the organisation. In response, some organisations enact innovation processes that disrupt the detrimental status quo towards sustainability. Firstly we focus on the macro-economic level by explaining the Belgian situation as regards career ending, activity level and the prospects for the future. Secondly we present a theoretical framework for understanding our approach: organisational development from a ‘process consultation’ point of view. Thirdly, we will describe several cases. Every case has an action or intervention component. Finally, we conclude with practical advices and recommendations for further research.
