Een nieuw oriënteringsinstrument – met hoge correlatie met reëel studiesucces – voor de begeleiding van de studiekeuze naar de universiteit toe

Abstract

Oriënterings- en toelatingsproeven (ijkingstoetsen, SIMON, …) hebben alle dezelfde beperking: de correlatie met de werkelijk behaalde studieresultaten in het eerste jaar hoger onderwijs is hoogstens 0,50 - 0,55. Dit heeft impact op het percentage leerlingen dat verkeerdelijk een negatief of positief advies krijgt om een opleiding in het hoger onderwijs aan te vatten. De Universiteit Hasselt werkte samen met een 35-tal secundaire scholen aan een alternatief. Zowel studentfactoren (vaardigheden m.b.t. evaluaties, doorzetten-inspannen, enz.), als factoren m.b.t. de vooropleiding werden bestudeerd. Het onderzoek leidde tot een prototype van een oriënteringsinstrument dat rekening houdt met de fit tussen de vooropleiding en de beoogde opleiding in het hoger onderwijs enerzijds, en met de schoolprestaties van de leerling in het secundair onderwijs anderzijds. Dit nieuwe instrument heeft een hoge correlatie (± 0,70) met studieresultaten aan de universiteit.

Higher education orientation and admission tests (the Flemish engineering and science positioning tests, SIMON,…) all have the same limitation: they correlate at most 0,50 - 0,55 with obtained study results in the first year of higher education. This has an impact on the percentage of students unjustly receiving a positive or negative advice to enroll in a bachelor programme. Hasselt University worked together with ± 35 secondary schools to develop an alternative. Both student factors (test taking and preparation strategies, persistence - effort, …) and factors with respect to prior education were studied. A prototype of an orientation instrument is presented that takes into account the match between a students’ prior education and the chosen bachelor programme as well as the results obtained at secondary school. The instrument has a high correlation with academic performance at university (± 0,70).
